Continuous Creation
Creation, we are taught, is not an
act that
happened once upon a time, once and
forever. The
act of bringing the world into
existence is a continuous
process. God called the world into
being,
and that call goes on. There is this
present moment
because God is present. Every
instant is an act of
creation. A moment is not a terminal
but a flash,
a signal of Beginning. — Abraham
Heschel
During Spring 2008, observing the
season of Earth Day, we had two
Wednesday seminars under the general
title, "Continuous Creation."
“The Whole Creation”
Wednesday, April 30
Led by Paul Derrick and
Fred Gehlbach
In 2001 Drs.
Michael Ard and
Paul Derrick, a former Baylor
professor who writes the weekly
column on astronomy in the Waco
Tribune-Herald, combined their
talents to present a concert in
which
Michael's piano performance of
William Duckworth's “The
Time
Curve Preludes” was given a
cosmic perspective by Paul's
accompanying slide presentation.
Recently Paul's revisited that
earlier presentation, and set it to
Don Robertson's synthesized recorded
“Starmusic: Horizons Beyond
Infinity.” It produces an
audio-visual experience that takes
one from the beginning to the end of
time-space, and from the remote
reaches of deep space to everyday
life.
FIGHTING GOLIATH:
THE TEXAS COAL WARS
Wednesday, May 7
A film directed by Mat Hames and
George Sledge
Narrated by Robert Redford
This thirty-minute film shows
that unlikely partners — mayors,
ranchers, CEOs, community groups,
legislators, and citizens — could
come together to oppose the
construction of 18 conventional
coal-fired power plants in Eastern
and Central Texas. For more
information on the film, see:
http://www.fightinggoliathfilm.com/
This was followed by a presentation
by
Mary Darden and her husband,
Bob, who both appeared in the
film. They updated the information
in the film, and provided new
evidence on threats to the
environment and actions that we all
can take.
